Networking is the technology that connects a data path between two computers. There are many protocols and standards that make this communication possible. IP or Internet Protocol has two versions, version 4 that has been in use for decades, and version 6 that is emerging. Ethernet is the physical layer for most networks. Ethernet switches connect multiple computers that are nearby each other to form a Local Area Network or LAN Routers connect LANs together over long distances. Often Telephony circuits, such as T1 or T3 are used for this purpose.
